With higher passenger expectations, rising costs and changing macroeconomic factors, there is an increasing need for rail operators to step up their game in order to stay ahead of the competition. One key player will be Malaysia’s Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), which is undergoing transformation to improve its rail economics and operational efficiency.
As the General Manager for Train Operations, Mahendran R Suppiah plays an important role in company-wide programme. With 30 years of experience in the industry, Mahendran has worked his way from being a train crew to becoming a Technical and Operational Compliance Auditor and the Head of KTMB’s Train Control and Command Centre. In his current role, not only does Mahendran manage all aspects of train operations to provide safe, reliable and efficient train services within the KTMB network, he is also driving the transformation agenda and facilitating continuous improvements.
Speaking at Asia Pacific Rail, taking place on March 22 & 23 in Hong Kong, Mahendran will be highlighting some of the key initiatives KTMB have put in place to improve their business. To raise the load and profitability of each journey, they are shifting towards heavy haul trains. To eliminate wastage and maximise the use of resources and manpower, processes are being streamlined to achieve lean rail operations. Furthermore, to improve operations efficiency, plans to enable seamless train services for passenger and freight are underway.
