UK Minister’s Welcome to UK Pavillion
I am delighted that so many British companies are able to showcase their expertise, albeit virtually, at the UK Pavillion at Asia Pacific Rail 2021. These events give us the opportunity to share with our international partners the experience that we have developed on our own railways, and what we can bring to theirs.
Our theme of green rail is particularly fitting this year, ahead of UK hosting COP26 in Glasgow in November. We are a global leader on taking climate action, becoming the first major economy to legally commit to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Our ‘Transport Decarbonisation Plan’ commits us to delivering a net zero railway by 2050, with sustained carbon reductions along the way, and an ambitious, sustainable, and cost-effective programme of electrification. Our ambition is to remove all diesel-only trains from the network by 2040, and I am sure, the UK rail industry is up to the task.
The UK supply chain has a rich wealth of history in rail and the UK government continues to support the supply chain in collaboration with industry to innovate. The UK Government’s First of a Kind Program has invested over £56million, since 2017, to support the development of innovative new rail technologies. This includes providing funding for HyrdoFLEX, the UK’s first hydrogen-powered train, which be showcased alongside other exciting and innovative green technologies at COP26.
We are supporting supply chain companies to innovate as we decarbonise. From new traction technologies such as hydrogen and battery, to retrofitting freight locomotives; the UK rail supply chain is going further than ever to innovate and meet these targets for decarbonisation. I am delighted that some of the best examples of British innovation are in attendance, seeking opportunities and partnership with other global partners.
We are here at Asia Pacific Rail to share our learning in the UK, and to hear the lesson that others have learned elsewhere. To start conversations that will help deliver better, cleaner & greener railways in all our countries. Please enjoy our virtual stands & keynote panels throughout the event.
