Pierre PoignantHave you ever wondered who the geniuses are behind the scenes at e-commerce giant Lazada? We sat down with one of them, Chief Operations Officer Pierre Poignant, for a quick glimpse his views on logistics, E-commerce and why the late French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte is his hero.

Could you tell us more about yourself, Pierre?

Certainly, I’m the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Lazada Group. I took on the role in July 2012, as part of the founding team. As Group COO, I oversee end-to-end operations, ensuring best-in-class logistics standards, seller experience and buyer experience. Prior to Lazada, I was an Associate Principal at McKinsey Paris & Singapore.

My industry hero is Napoleon – he invented modern, flexible logistics which gave him an edge in his military conquests. Furthermore, in order to train his logistics engineers, he created the school I graduated from in Paris: Ecole Polytechnique.

Which logistics challenge/opportunity is front of mind for you at Lazada going into 2016 and why?

Lazada experiences massive growth every year as eCommerce is taking off across Southeast Asia. Our main challenge is for our operations to transform & scale together with the growing sale volumes, while constantly improving our customer experience.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Lazada is pioneering e-Commerce across Southeast Asia. We aim to be the leading online destination in the region for shoppers and sellers. Building the logistics ecosystem to deliver this vision is what excites me the most.

Are there any cool projects that you’re currently working on that you could share with us?

There are many great projects on-going across the Group, two of which I am excited about are our build-to-suit 4th generation fulfillment centers and our fully automated sorting centers.
