Are we entering into an age of e-commerce consolidation in Indonesia?

The e-commerce landscape in many of the emerging markets in Southeast Asia has, through until 2016, been a story of fragmentation. Whereas in markets like China and the US we have seen consolidation through the emergence of clearly dominant players (Alibaba and Amazon respectively), in Southeast Asia there are a host of players in each market fighting it out for dominance.

In Indonesia, these key players are as follows:

  • Amazon
  • Berniaga
  • Blibli.com
  • Bukalapak
  • Elevenia
  • Lazada Indonesia
  • Mataharimall.com
  • OLX
  • Tokopedia
  • Zalora Indonesia

With worrying tremors spreading through regional e-commerce in the wake of high-profile exit of Rakuten from the region, as well as the folding of Ensogo, there is a suggestion that the sector might be entering a patch of rough water. This would lend to the idea that the survivors will be able to grab a much bigger piece of the pie and effectively consolidate their respective markets.

Who will be the ones to do the consolidation? Will there be further tough times ahead for the sector? Can a country as big as Indonesia happily support such fragmentation?

At the upcoming E-Commerce Show Indonesia 2016, running 16th-17th November at the Pullman Central Park in Jakarta, we will be bringing together a host of key e-commerce influencers to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the sector in Indonesia.

One of the sessions at the show will be a keynote panel featuring four leaders from key local players:
