Esports is becoming a growing market for the telecommunications industry – with the role of 5G set to solidly the relationship between Esports and telco industry. At Telecoms World Asia we recently spoke with Carlos Alimurung, an Esports industry expert and the current CEO of ONE Esports, who are set to have a big impact on the industry landscape in 2020. Carlos will be taking part in the keynote plenary at Telecoms World Asia to discuss the future of Esports and the potential the industry has to play a big role in telecommunications in the years to come.
1. Can you share a brief introduction of what you do and why eSports is an area of focus for your company?
I’m Carlos Alimurung, the CEO of ONE Esports. Our mission is to share and celebrate the stories of esports heroes who ignite the world with hope, dreams, inspiration, and strength. ONE is Asia’s largest sports media property in history with a global broadcast reach of 2.6 billion potential viewers across 145+ countries. We expanded from martial arts into esports because in both spaces there was a need to supercharge the storytelling of the sports’ heroes and values. Moreover, over 70% of ONE Championship’s martial arts fans are also fans of esports. Lastly, our world-class production, media distribution, sponsorship sales, and merchandising capabilities are leveraged across the businesses.
2. In one sentence, tell us how you would describe the state of the eSports industry today?
Esports is still in its early phase of growth with many opportunities to engage with this fast-growing, yet hard-to-reach global tribe of players and fans, but companies need the right partnerships to build an authentic relationship with the esports community.
3. How do you see the industry evolving over the next 5 years?
We believe there is a multi-billion USD global opportunity in esports, and we’re going after it. For the industry to fulfill its potential, it needs to expand the audience beyond hardcore players and fans and provide higher ROI to its partners. Over the next 5 years, you’ll see ONE Esports lead the charge in broadening the audience for esports through our premier storytelling at oneesports.gg, which is already a Top 5 global esports property, and through our world-class production capabilities in live events, competitions, and experiences. Moreover, you’ll see ONE Esports generate more value for our partners by innovating our always-on, turnkey solution to engage with the esports community.
4. Why does eSports represent an exciting opportunity for the telecommunications industry?
The esports ecosystem is a digitally native community. Consequently, the hunger for connectivity and data will only continue to grow. The telecom industry is one of the best-positioned sectors to benefit from the esports movement. Moreover, mobile esports will continue to expand, because smartphones have empowered anyone to experience and participate in esports without big investments in a PC or gaming console.
The telecom industry needs to ask itself the following questions: Are we investing in authentic relationships with the esports community? Are we empowering the esports ecosystem to grow? Are we closing the technology gap, so everyone can access and participate in esports? Are we designing products and services that target the needs of the esports community with the right features and functionalities?
5. What technology are you looking forward to hearing about at Telecoms World Asia 2020?
Interactive AR/VR in a live setting continues to be an interest area for ONE Esports. Our live events are world-class productions, and we’re constantly exploring how we can deliver these experiences to fans who are unable to attend our events. Furthermore, we want to deliver that experience in a way that is not only immersive but also interactive.
